CU Men's Basketball Preview - at Vassar/Bard (1/13-14)

Despite being on the road, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team has an opportunity to climb back into the conference playoff picture this weekend when it travels to face Vassar and Bard.

The Golden Knights (6-7 overall, 1-3 Liberty League) split with both teams in 2015-16, but have handled both opponents well in the past. Clarkson is 20-12 all-time against Vassar and has won four of the last five, while the Knights are 9-1 through 10 meetings versus Bard.

The defending Liberty League Performer of the Week, senior Derek Hart was "slowed" slightly against Skidmore on Tuesday where he scored 18 points, just two below his season average of 19.9 points per contest. Hart ranks third in the league both scoring and rebounding (8.3 rpg) and is atop the leaderboard in field goal percentage (58.2%). In league only games, Hart is averaging 22.5 points per contest. Classmate Drew Zlogar is tied for fifth in the league in 3-point field goals made with 27 and is averaging 16.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while fellow senior Michael Hayduk leads the conference in 3-pointers with 37, contributing heavily to his 9.8 ppg.

Vassar (5-8 overall, 1-4 Liberty League) receives a significant portion of its scoring from three players. Alex Seff averages 14.5 points per game (12th in the Liberty League) with 4.6 rebounds per game and 21 3-pointers, while Jesse Browne has made 23 3-pointers to help produce 13.3 points per game (16th in the Liberty League) and 4.0 rebounds per game. Mason Dyslin is one spot behind Browne on the conference leaderboard in scoring and averages 12.6 ppg to go along with his 4.8 rebounds per contest. Vassar is eighth in the league in scoring (67.1 ppg) and has the largest rebounding deficit in the conference, coming up short on caroms by an average of 7.7 per game.

Conversely, Bard (2-10 overall, 0-3 Liberty League) has the best rebounding margin in the league at plus-6.5 per game, a huge plus since the Raptors are averaging a league-low 61.5 points per game. The team is also shooting just 59.5% from the free throw line, but that figure jumps to 66.3% when Armando Dunn's 25-for-61 from the line is removed. Dunn averages 9.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, figures that are nearly identical to David Runcie's 9.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Harry Johnson is the team's leading scorer at 10.0 points per contest, but he is shooting just 29.5% from the floor. Chris Lockwood also tosses in 7.9 ppg and leads the team with 2.7 assists per contest.
