CU Men's Soccer Preview - vs RIT (9/24)

After a strong nonconference start to the season, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team starts Liberty League play by hosting RIT on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson is 4-2-1 so far this season and is currently ranked ninth in the NSCAA East Region rankings. The Golden Knights have been one of the best defensive teams in the country. In seven games, Clarkson has allowed just .41 goals per game, which is the 17th best mark in the nation. Senior goalkeeper Michael King has been a big part of that success. He currently has a save percentage of .925 which leads the Liberty League and is the sixth best mark in the country. King also leads the conference in goals against average (.408), saves (37), and shutouts (4). King has been joined in the back by James Homan, John Furcick, Josh Eidem, and Zach Golden who have played the majority of available minutes, while Andrew Akiki and Ryan Stinson have also performed well in the defense.

On the offensive end, Clarkson had struggled to score, notching just five goals in the first six games. However, the Green and Gold broke out with three goals against SUNY Canton, the highest total of the year. Henry Gomez and Chris Jupin both scored their first career goals against the Kangaroos, joining Stephen Klimek and Aidan Subra as first year players who have notched goals. Eric Herberger also scored his first goal of the season against Canton. Kevin Calnan added two assists in the win, giving him three assists on the season. Calnan now has seven total points and two goals, both of which lead the Golden Knights. Also on the scoresheet is Jon Jones who scored the game-winning goal against SUNY Geneseo.

RIT has a 3-3-1 record overall. The Tigers have struggled on the road, tallying just a 0-2-1 record, including a recent 1-0 overtime loss at Rochester. RIT is coming off a win though, as a penalty kick goal by Dean Kouroupas gave the Tigers a 2-1 overtime win against Nazareth. That was the first time all season RIT has scored multiple goals in a game, and the Tigers have scored just five goals total. Conversely, RIT has allowed a paltry five goals through seven games. Clarkson and RIT have a long history, having played 46 times since 1970. RIT has a slight edge, holding a 23-20-3 record against the Golden Knights. The Tigers have won five straight against Clarkson, including consecutive 2-1 wins in 2014 and 2015.

The two teams will meet at 2:00 pm on Saturday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.
