CU Men's Hoops Ends Season with Loss to Skidmore

Potsdam, NY - Over the final 15 minutes of the first half, Skidmore College outscored the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team 34-7 and simply cruised in the second half to take a 72-43 decision from the Golden Knights on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their season come to an end, falling to 9-16 overall and 6-10 in the Liberty League. Skidmore clinched a playoff spot, improving to 15-9 and 10-5 in conference games.

Clarkson had just one lead in the game, up 7-5 after a Mike Hayduk 3-pointer in the early going, but it was a 3-pointer from Edvinas Rupkus at the 15:02 mark that made the game spiral out of control for the Knights. Rupkus's 3-pointer was the first of three long-range shots from Skidmore in the next four minutes as the Thoroughbreds scored 19 unanswered points over the course of seven-plus minutes. Even when Clarkson did halt the run, it was only temporary as Skidmore enjoyed several impressive streaks including 26-2, 29-3, 31-5 or the 34-7 run to end the half. The Thoroughbreds shot 50.0% from the field (17-for-34) with seven 3-pointers and committed just one turnover in the first half, while Clarkson made only six shots on 22 attempts (27.3%) with one 3-pointer and 11 turnovers.

The Skidmore advantage pushed into the 30s in the second half and it was just a matter of the clock running out as Clarkson didn't have enough offense to mount such a comeback. Only four players finished in double figures across the two teams as both squads emptied their benches over the final 10 minutes of the game. Clarkson's Felix Abongo led all scorers with 13 points and added six rebounds, while Royce Paris produced a team-high 12 points for Skidmore. Isaac Carp and Erik Sanders contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Thoroughbreds
