Clarkson Men Take 7-Game Unbeaten Streak into ECAC Hockey Weekend Action at Cheel

A seven-game unbeaten streak, highlighted by the championship crown of the Shillelagh Tournament, capped off the most successful month of November for the Clarkson University Hockey team in nine years. The Golden Knights, guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, will now look to continue their roll into December when they close out play before the exam/holiday break with three key ECAC Hockey games in the North Country.

Clarkson hosts Dartmouth and 8th-ranked Harvard at Cheel Arena this weekend in a pair of 7:00 p.m. contests, and then plays archrival St. Lawrence in Canton on December 9 to close out play before a 20-day break.

Since opening the month with a 5-3 loss to 6th-ranked Quinnipiac, the Green and Gold have strung together five wins and two ties to improve their overall record to 8-5-3.  Clarkson stands in a tie for third place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 4-1-1 league mark.

Led by senior captain James de Haas and assistant captains, senior Perry D'Arrisso and juniors Brett Gervais and Nic Pierog along with a healthy contribution from the Class of 2020, the Knights went 5-1-2 in November. The Green and Gold also posted a .750 winning percentage (6-2) in the month of November during the 2007-08 campaign, the last season Clarkson advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

This past weekend in South Bend, IN, Clarkson claimed its first in-season tournament crown since 2006. The Knights skated to their second consecutive tie against Yale, a 2-2 non-league draw in the first game of the tournament held at Notre Dame, and advanced to the championship game after defeating the Bulldogs in a tie-breaking shootout. Clarkson shut out the host Fighting Irish 2-0 in Saturday's title matchup at the Compton Family Arena for their first tournament title since winning the Badger Showdown 10 years ago in Wisconsin.

•    Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly has started 13 of Clarkson's first 16 games and posts a .923 save percentage and a 2.38 goals against average along with two shutouts.
He is unbeaten in his last six starts after missing weekend action on November 4-5 with an illness. Kielly was named Most Outstanding Player of the Shillelagh Tournament. He turned aside all 35 shots he faced against 11th-ranked Notre Dame in Saturday's Championship game for his second career shutout. Kielly was named NCAA Ice Hockey's 1st Star of the Week and also earned ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week honors for the third time of his freshman campaign.
• Clarkson's Class of 2020 is the top producing freshman class in ECAC Hockey and is tied for third overall in the NCAA, averaging 3.19 points per game.  The Knights' seven rookie skaters have accounted for 38% of Clarkson's offense with 51 points on 17 goals and 34 assists. During November the freshmen were on the scoresheet for 20 of the Knights' 25 goals during the month, including scoring 12.
• Freshman Devin Brosseau leads the Green and Gold offensively with 14 points, and is the Knights' leading playmaker with 10 assists. He tallied the game-winner in the championship win over Notre Dame. Brosseau also tops Clarkson in plus/minus at +11. Brosseau has twice been named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week (10/17, 11/21). He was also named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the
Month for October.
• Rookie Sheldon Rempal (5-8) is tied with senior Jordan Boucher (7-6) as Clarkson's second-leading scorer with 13 points. Named to All-Tournament Team over the weekend he recorded a regulation goal in each game and also scored the first goal in the tie-breaking shootout against Yale in tourney first-round action. Rempal has a current five-game point streak with two goals and five assists during that span.
•  Freshman Nico Sturm follows right behind with 12 points (3-9).  He had a six-game point streak snapped in Friday's tie against Yale, but came back on Saturday with the lone assist on the game-winner against Notre Dame. 
• The Freshman Line centered by Sturm (3-7), left wing Brosseau (4-6) and right wing Rempal (5-7) has accounted for 12 goals and 20 assists over the past 12 games since skating together starting with the game at Providence (10/21).
• Senior Troy Josephs has come on strong recently with four goals and three assists over the past seven games.  Josephs has 10 points (5-5) in 15 games this season. 
• James de Haas leads the Knights in scoring from the blueline with eight points on three goals and five assists. 
• After missing the first nine games of the season nursing an injury defenseman Terrance Amorosa has made a big impact on the Knights' blueline as the Green and Gold have gone 5-0-2 with the junior back in the lineup. He has tallied a power-play goal and three assists through seven games and posts a +4 plus/minus rating.  Amorosa was named to the Shillelagh All-Tournament team. 
• Clarkson won the shootout over Yale 3-1 with Rempal, Amorosa and Boucher scoring. The Knights' last shootout win was against Bemidji State (1-0) in the opening round of
the Catamount Cup at the University of Vermont on December 30, 2005.
• Clarkson is 5-0-1 in road games, including two wins and a tie against teams that were ranked in the Top 15 in the nation. The Knights are 0-0-1 at neutral site games and 3-5-1 at home this season. The Knights were 5-11-1 in road games last season and 15-2-2 at Cheel Arena in 2015-16.
• The Knights have scored the opening goal in 10 of the first 16 games, going 6-2-2 when they score first. Clarkson has scored the opening goal in each of the past six games.
• Clarkson is fifth in the country in penalty minutes, averaging 18.1 minutes per game. The Knights' penalty kill is rated 21st in the nation at 85.3% (93-109). 
• The Knights' power-play is 38th in Division I at 15.9% (13-82). Clarkson was 0-of-8 with the man-advantage at the Shillelagh Tournament.
•    In its 95th season, Clarkson boasts 71 winning campaigns and a 1,403-840-152 all-time record for a .618 winning % since 1920-21.

•    Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft – de Haas (2012 Detroit - 6th rd, 170),  Terrance Amorosa (2013 Philadelphia - 5th rd, 189), Troy Josephs (2013 Pittsburgh - 7th rd, 209) and Kelly Summers (2014 Ottawa - 7th rd, 189).

Scouting Dartmouth:
An elder statesman among NCAA Hockey coaches, Bob Gaudet is in his 29th year coaching at the Division I level and is in his 20th year behind the Dartmouth bench. The Big Green own a 3-3-2 overall record and a 1-3-1 ECAC Hockey slate. Dartmouth split a series vs. Robert Morris in Pittsburgh, over the weekend, winning 5-2 on Sunday after losing 3-0 on Saturday. After opening the season with wins over Michigan (3-2) and Colgate (2-0) and a tie with Cornell (1-1), the Big Green have struggled going 0-3-1 before Sunday's win over Robert Morris. Troy Crema (4-1) and Corey Kalk (2-3) lead the Big Green offense with five points apiece. Devin Buffalo has seen the bulk of the action in the Dartmouth goal and posts a .916 save percentage and a 2.46 goals against average along with one shutout through eight starts.

Scouting Harvard:
Harvard, guided by 13th-year head coach Ted Donato, makes the trip to the North Country boasting the third most productive offense in the country. The Crimson, who play at St. Lawrence on Friday, enter the weekend averaging 4.22 goals per game. Harvard, which defeated Bentley 5-2 in Cambridge, MA on Saturday, owns a 6-2-1 overall record and has a 2-1-1 mark early in ECAC Hockey play. Unbeaten at home, the Crimson are 3-2 on the road having lost at Top-10 ranked Quinnipiac (4-2) and Boston University (5-3). Alexander Kerfoot and Sean Malone, two of the top forwards in the country, pace the Crimson offense with 13 (3-10) and 12 (7-5) points, respectively. Merrick Madsen has seen all the action in the Harvard crease and holds a .915 save percentage and a 2.22 goals against average along with one shutout.

The Series:
Clarkson holds a significant 70-28-7 lead over Dartmouth in their series, which began with a 4-1 win in Hanover, NH on February 4, 1929. The series has been fairly even recently with both teams winning five games apiece in the last 10 meetings. Dartmouth has won three of the last five games, but the Knights skated away victors in their last battle, winning 4-3 in Potsdam on February 27. The Big Green won the first meeting last season, 5-2 in Hanover, NH on January 16.  Clarkson is 17-5-3 over Dartmouth at Cheel Arena. James de Haas has a team-high five points on two goals and three assists against Dartmouth. Jordan Boucher leads the Knights with three goals in the series to go along with one assist. Sam Vigneault and Kelly Summers have two goals each against the Big Green.

The Knights and Harvard will be meeting for the 120th time in their all-time series which first began with a 2-1 Clarkson win in Lake Placid on December 28, 1935.  Both teams have 54 wins in the rivalry along with 11 ties.The Crimson have gone 7-3 over the past 10 meetings, but the Knights swept the 2015-16 season series, winning 5-1 in Cambridge, MA on January 16 and 2-1 in Potsdam on February 26. Harvard defeated the Knights twice in 2014-15 with a 6-3 victory in Bright-Landry Hockey Center and 3-2 at Cheel Arena. Clarkson is 15-12-2 over Harvard at Cheel. A.J. Fossen has a team-high three goals and five points against the Crimson. Sam Vigneault has four points on two goals and two assists in three games against Harvard. Troy Josephs has three assists in the series. Steve Perry holds a .895 save percentage and a 1.95 GAA over the Crimson in two games.
