CU Men's Basketball Preview - vs. SUNY Canton (11/30)

Last season the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team lost a pair of games to route 11 rival SUNY Canton for the first time ever, and the Golden Knights will be looking to end that modest streak on Wednesday when they host the Kangaroos at 7:00 pm at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights enter the game with a record of 3-3 overall, winning one game in three tries last week. The Knights very well could have won all three, as they fell in overtime to Oswego State and then dropped a four-point decision to Hamilton College on Saturday. SUNY Canton also has a .500 record with a mark of 2-2.

In the first two games of the season, Clarkson struggled mightily from the 3-point line, shooting just 25.0% (12-for-48), but in its last four games the Golden Knights have found a groove from the perimeter, shooting 48.5% (48-for-99). A big difference has been the performance of senior Drew Zlogar, who shook off an early-season slump where he missed his first 14 attempts in the opening two games only to go 16-for-33 in the next four. Zlogar is averaging 15.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game with six games gone by, including 19.0 ppg over the last four. Classmate Derek Hart is averaging 19.0 ppg for the season, thanks to a shooting percentage of 60.9% from the floor, good enough for third in the Liberty League. Hart also leads the Golden Knights in rebounding (8.3 rpg), blocks (1.2 bpg) and assists (2.8 apg).

SUNY Canton has been playing fast-paced basketball so far this season with middling results. The team is averaging 85.0 points per game, but allowing 86.3 points per contest. The good news for the Roos is that things can get better for them, as the team is shooting just 28.1% from beyond the 3-point line and 57.0% from the free throw line. Senior guard Sam Annorh leads the team with 26.3 points and 7.3 assists per game, shooting an impressive 50.7% from the floor. Romario Fletcher tops that figure by making 56.1% of his shots, though teams may start committing fouls against the big man in late-game situations as he has shot only 46.9% from the free throw line. Even with that flaw, Fletcher is still averaging 20.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest.
