CU Volleyball Scores Two Sweeps in Liberty League Action

Potsdam, NY – Junior Rachael Aird scored 22 kills and combined for a .400 hitting percentage over two matches as the Clarkson University Volleyball swept a pair of Liberty League matches over St. Lawrence and RIT on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the Liberty League with the wins. Clarkson will face Union and Skidmore tomorrow afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton, NY.

Clarkson hit .203 overall in the match, hitting .286 in the first set and .268 in the third set in its most convincing wins over St. Lawrence (25-17, 25-19, 25-16). In the opener, the Golden Knights were dominant, racing out to a 15-3 lead before St. Lawrence finally started to put together some offense. With such a significant advantage, the Golden Knights just cruised to the win in the first. The second set saw the two teams exchange points early on as Clarkson led by just a single point right before either team reached double digits (9-8). However, the Knights rattled off six straight points and eight of nine to take another solid lead. The third set opened with six straight points by the Knights and nine of the first 10 overall as once again Clarkson just had too many options for the Saints.

Aird finished with kills and just three errors in 26 swings (.346 hitting percentage), while freshman Rachel Reusch battered the Saints to the tune of a .438 hitting percentage on 10 kills with three miscues in 16 attempts. Kate Isaksen led the team with 24 digs, while Kendall Cheval chipped in 10 digs. Jillian Saenz recorded 30 assists. For St. Lawrence, Masha Kolesnikova led the team with seven kills and Katie Kull had 18 assists. Both Katie Rowell (13) and Maddy Bishop (10) were in double figures in digs and the pair also recorded two aces each.

Clarkson played perhaps its best match of the year in the nightcap, producing a .321 hitting percentage in a three-set sweep of RIT (25-13, 25-14, 25-23). The Tigers were coming off a five-set win against Skidmore and the rested Clarkson squad took advantage with a dynamic performance defensively. The Knights were able to get key digs to keep rallies alive and spoil some strong swings from the Tigers throughout the match, but more so in the first two sets as Clarkson recorded double-digit wins. In the third set, RIT found a bit of a groove on offense and found itself up by four on two occasions (17-13, 20-16). However, Clarkson tied the set at 20-20 thanks to two miscues by RIT and kills from Saenz and Reusch. The Knights jumped ahead by one with another kill from Reusch and though RIT tied the set on the next point, Clarkson never trailed again, winning 25-23.

Aird and Reusch each went 10-1-19 for a .474 hitting percentage, with Aird recording a pair of solo blocks and Reusch producing four block assists. Saenz produced 33 assists while Kate Isaksen led the team on defense with 18 digs and a pair of aces. Cheval had eight kills, 11 digs and two aces, and Sophia Holms also produced seven kills. For RIT, Sarah Szybist struck for 16 kills, but hit .250 in the match (16-6-40) and Joelle Marston tossed in 11 kills on 23 attacks, but also made five errors. Erin Parkinson was one dig shy of a double-double with 24 assists and nine digs. Szybist also tied for the team lead with nine digs.
