Kielly Posts 43 Saves in Clarkson's 3-3 Tie at #15 Providence

Freshman Jake Kielly posted 43 saves and three different Golden Knights scored their first career goals as the Clarkson University Hockey team gained a 3-3 tie on the road Friday night against 15th-ranked Providence College at Schneider Arena in Rhode Island.

Clarkson, behind a career night from its rookie goaltender, moves its record to 2-2-1 with all the games coming against Hockey East teams. The Knights play at 5th-ranked UMass-Lowell on Saturday night to close out the weekend road trip in New England.

Outshot 46-23, Clarkson was shorthanded numerous times in the non-conference road game, killing off seven of the Friars' 10 power-play opportunities. The Knights were 1-of-4 on the man-advantage and also scored their third shorthanded goal through the first five games.

Kielly, whose previous high for saves in a game was 27, turned aside 20 Providence shots in the third period alone. One of the freshman's best saves was a breakaway stop with 1:26 remaining in overtime.

Clarkson twice overcame one-goal deficits and took a 3-2 lead early in the third period on sophomore defenseman Tyko Karjalainen first goal as a Golden Knight. Karjalainen took a pass from junior Nick Pierog and fired in a wrist shot over the glove hand of Providence's goaltender at 5:39 of the third for the Green and Gold's first lead of the night.

The Friars, however, forced overtime with their third power-play goal of the night with Josh Wilkins connecting at 16:14.

After a scoreless first period and a delay to start the second frame because of a power outage, the Friars (1-2-1) opened the scoring 32 seconds in with a power-play tally by Scott Conway.

At 9:22 Clarkson tied it up when freshman defenseman Jordan Schneider got a stick on a bouncing puck in front off a shot by junior Troy Josephs for a shorthand score. Senior Perry D'Arrisso also assisted.

The Friars scored again on the man-advantage with Brandon Duhaime's goal at 11:59, but freshman Sheldon Rempal made it 2-2 heading into the third period with a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle at 15:50. Junior Brett Gervais assisted.
