Knights Fall in Men's Hockey Exhibition Play

A pair of late goals by the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières spoiled the 2016-17 debut of the Clarkson University Hockey team, handing the Golden Knights a 4-3 loss in exhibition play Saturday night before 2,793 fans at Cheel Arena.

In a back-and-forth contest, the Patriots tallied the game's final two goals at 9:43 and 12:10, respectively of the third period to gain the one-goal win. The result does not count on Clarkson's record. The Golden Knights officially open their 95th season and 26th year at Cheel when they play Hockey East foe University of Vermont on Friday, October 7 in the first game of a home-and-home weekend series against the Catamounts.

Three different Knights scored goals and seven players recorded at least one point for the Green and Gold. Senior captain, defenseman James de Hass led the way with one goal and one assist. Freshman Sheldon Rempal tallied a pair of assists.

Clarkson outshot UQTR 36-26, including a 17-7 margin through the opening 20 minutes. Freshman Jake Kielly made 22 saves in his first appearance in a Clarkson jersey.

Clarkson was 2-of-8 on the power play and killed off three of the Patriots' four man-advantage chances.

UQTR scored first with Marc-Olivier Mimar's rebound goal in front at 10:43.

Junior assistant captain Brett Gervais tied the game, while the Knights were skating on a five-minute major power play. Gervais took a pass from de Haas and fired in a blast from the top of the slot at 13:07. Rempal also assisted. Clarkson went on top early in the second frame with a goal by freshman Devin Brosseau from the right circle at 4:43, connecting off a cross-ice pass from classmate Haralds Egle. Rookie Nico Sturm also assisted.

UQTR answered back with its own power-play tally, with Jeremy Beaudry scoring at 12:00 to tie the game 2-2 through two periods.

The Knights went back on top early in the final frame with de Haas connecting for a power-play marker on a blast from the blueline at 3:06. Senior Jordan Boucher and Rempal assisted.

The Patriots came back with goals by Pierre-Olivier Morin and Beaudry to gain the road win.

Notes:
The Knights dressed 24 of the 26 players on the roster, including all eight freshmen. The Rookies accounted for five (1-4) of Clarkson's nine (3-6) points. Senior goaltender Steve Perry and junior defenseman Terrance Amorosa did not play in the exhibition game, nursing minor injuries.
