Hart's Double-Double Leads Clarkson Men's Hoops Past RPI

Troy, NY - Junior Derek Hart made nine of his first 10 shots from the field to help lead the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team past Rensselaer 69-63 on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights ended a two-game losing streak with the win to improve to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League, while Rensselaer suffered its fourth straight defeat at the hands of Clarkson, dropping to 7-4 and 1-1. Clarkson will start a five-game homestand next Friday when it faces Bard College.

Clarkson shot 60 percent in the first half against the Engineers, but despite the strong start the Knights couldn't break away with any significant lead until late in the half. The two teams traded baskets for the first 10-plus minutes of the contest, but Clarkson went on a 12-2 run in a stretch of five minutes, beginning with a 3-pointer from Tom Nuttle at the 9:30 mark and ending with a lay up by Conrad Zampier with 4:29 to go. The Knights ended the half with a 12-point advantage (37-25) as Hart posted 10 points and Drew Zlogar scored nine points on a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the 3-point line.

In the second half, the Knights held a double-digit advantage for the majority of the half, peaking at 17 points twice, including a 59-42 lead with 11:08 to go. Rensselaer dropped the margin to nine with 7:26 to go, but Clarkson maintained its control until the end when Zampier made a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left to reclaim an 11-point edge. Though the Engineers scored the final five points of the game, after Zampier's free throws the game outcome was never in doubt.

Hart finished with a career-high 23 points, going 10-for-15 from the floor, and added in 10 rebounds. Zlogar finished with 15 points, going 5-for-10 overall but 4-for-5 fro the 3-point line. Zampier also added 12 points and nine boards and Felix Abongo contributed 10 points, five boards and three assists. For Rensselaer, Tom Horvat scored a team-high 22 points and also made four steals, while Jonathan Luster scored 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting.
