CU Men's Basketball Preview - at Skidmore College (1/19)

With the completion of Tuesday night's game against Skidmore College the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team will have reached the midway point of the conference schedule, and the Golden Knights will be looking to go into their 10-day break with a winning record.

Clarkson has won four of its first seven games in league and is 7-9 overall, while Skidmore enters Tuesday's contest with a record of 8-6 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League. Only two games separate the top of the league from the bottom as no team is more than a game over .500, and eight of the nine teams are within a game of the top as there is currently a four-way tie for first.

Though Clarkson and Skidmore are dead even in the all-time series at 23-23, the Thoroughbreds have enjoyed a strong run in the past few years, winning 10 times in 11 games since the start of the 2010-11 season. Skidmore won all three games against Clarkson last year, including the conference championship game which was decided by just four points.

Felix Abongo still leads the Golden Knights in several categories, including scoring (13.6 ppg), rebounding (6.4 rpg), and steals (1.3 spg). Despite being the top option for the Knights all season and the key to every team's scouting report, Abongo has still managed to push his career scoring total up to 1180 points and is within 14 points of 12th all-time (Marques Charlton). He is only 24 points away from reaching the top 10 all-time in scoring at Clarkson. Junior guard Conrad Zampier and Drew Zlogar have also bolstered the Clarkson offense recently, as Zampier averaged 18 points per game last week, including a career-high 29 against St. Lawrence on Tuesday, and Zlogar averaged 12 points per contest coming off the bench.

The pre-season favorite in the Liberty League, Skidmore was struck with a key injury in the early part of the season when All-American Aldin Medujnanin was hit with an injury that has kept him out for the last six weeks. The Thoroughbreds have therefore been relying a little more on Erik Sanders, and the senior guard/forward hasn't disappointed. Sanders is averginag 17.9 points per game, third in the Liberty League, and has been a consistent performer all season. He scored 13 points in the first game of the year, but in the past 13 contests has scored between 16 and 22 points in every game. Freshman guard Edvinas Rupkus has also stepped up since Medujnanin's injury, averaging 15.6 points per game and shooting a league-best 57.9% from the floor. Rupkus has scored 20 or more points four times in the last nine games.
