CU Men's Hoops Hot Start Enough to Hold Off RIT

Potsdam, NY - Eight free throws from Felix Abongo and Conrad Zampier in the final 30 seconds were enough to assure the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team of its third straight conference win as the Golden Knights defeated RIT 75-68 in Liberty League action Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-8 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League while the Tigers suffered their first conference defeat and dropped to 7-6 and 3-1. Clarkson will take on Hobart College on Saturday afternoon, while RIT travels to play St. Lawrence.

Though the Knights had the first four points of the game, it was RIT that raced out to an early lead by doubling up Clarkson 12-6 in the first six minutes of the game, but Clarkson got hot from the perimeter with Drew Zlogar, Mike Hayduk, and Conrad Zampier each hitting a pair of threes in the first half to give the Knights an 18-point advantage at the break. Clarkson shot 6-for-10 from outside and 16-for-31 overall while committing just five turnovers in the first half, and the Tigers settled for a 9-for-35 effort, but were kept somewhat afloat with 10 offensive rebounds.

It appeared as if Clarkson might run away with the game in the early going of the second half, but two 3-pointers from AJ Horde and some quick layups by two more Tigers' guards pulled RIT back within eight very quickly at 48-40 with 15:04 to go. Horde buried another 3-pointer five minutes later to reduce the margin to only five and a few moments later the deficit dropped to four. However, Clarkson wouldn't see its lead evaporate entirely, getting key shots when necessary. Horde put in another shot at the 1:00 minute mark to get RIT within four once again at 66-62, but in the waning seconds Felix Abongo buried four free throws, and Conrad Zampier sunk four more to keep RIT at a safe distance.

Abongo finished with a double-double with 17 pints and 10 rebounds while Zampier finished with 16 points. Zlogar chipped in 15 points, shooting 4-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line and Derek Hart added 10 points, eight boards and five blocks. For the Tigers, Horde scored 19 points and made four steals and Kamron Davis matched him with 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Anthony Lewis came off the bench to score 12 points and produce four steals in just 13 minutes of action.
