Knights Win Fifth Straight with Runs in Bunches

Auburndale, FL - With three runs in the first inning, the Clarkson University Baseball team led throughout the game against Keene State, claiming a 7-2 win on its final day in Florida to close out the spring trip with a record of 10-1.

The Golden Knights, winners of five straight, are off to their best start since the 1943 season. The team is hitting .322 thus far with an earned run average of just 1.78.

Clarkson took little time getting on top as Will Coleman reached on a hit by pitch and Chris Miller followed with a one-out walk. Greg Jasek then hit one to center to score Coleman, and two batters later Dom Pirro delivered a two-out double to plate Miller and Jasek. In the third inning, Miller led off with a double, and Jasek ripped a single past the second baseman to give the Knights a 4-0 lead. Ben Knauf then crushed a double to the gap to send Jasek home with his second run of the inning.

The Owls got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when a steal of third resulted in an overthrow and a run, but Clarkson picked up two more in the top of the eighth. Knauf was hit by a pitch and Anthony Padrazo singled to set up a sacrifice situation for Tim Beninati. The senior catcher sent one up the first base line to put runners in scoring position, and Connor Dietrich took advantage of the chance with a single up the middle to score both runners. In the bottom of the ninth, Keene State chipped away with a two-out double to score one run against reliever Rory Corcoran, but that was all that the Owls would get.

Jeremy Barber earned the win with six strong innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four. Corcoran came on in the seventh and went three innings, giving up two hits and two walks and whiffing three. Jasek was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored and Dietrich was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Miller also circled the bases twice for the Knights.
