Knights' Hoops Drop 78-71 Decision at SUNY Canton

Canton, NY - After scoring nearly 70 points in less than 35 minutes, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team went cold down the stretch and watched SUNY Canton end the contest with an 18-2 run as the Golden Knights closed out the first semester with a 78-71 loss on Thursday evening.

The Golden Knights finished off their non-league schedule with a record of 3-6 overall as a modest two-game winning streak came to an end. SUNY Canton improved to 5-0 overall.

Clarkson led throughout the first half opening the game with four small five-point leads in the first 11 minutes, including a 19-14 edge after a Tom Nuttle 3-poitner with 8:54 to go. The Kangaroos came back to tie the game at 19-19 and were down just one (21-20), but Clarkson capped off a 7-1 run with a lay up by Felix Abongo at 3:45 to take its first seven-point lead (28-21). The Knights would still be up seven a few minutes later, but a lay up followed by a free throw and a 3-pointer pulled the Roos back within one in the final minute. Two free throws from Abongo gave Clarkson a three-point edge at the half.

In the second half the game was tied up at 39-39 and 41-41, but Clarkson never relinquished the lead, pushing its advantage to seven after an Abongo basket at 8:57. The lead expanded to nine on a jumper from Nuttle with 5:12 to go, making the score 69-60 in favor of the Golden Knights. However, that would be the end of Clarkson's offensive reign. SUNY Canton scored the next six points before a jumper from Abongo returned the lead to five (71-66), but those would prove to be the final points of the game as the Roos scored the next 12 points, tying the game at 71-71 with 2:45 to go and taking its first lead of the game when Kam Peterkin recorded a steal and followed with a lay in 10 seconds later. Five free throws in the waning moments were all that SUNY Canton could muster, but Clarkson's offense was halted in the seven-point defeat.

The difference in the game proved to be turnovers, as Clarkson committed 19 while the Kangaroos had just seven. SUNY Canton scored 26 points off the Clarkson miscues, while the Knights had just three points on SUNY Canton's seven turnovers.

Felix Abongo finished with 20 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the floor, and also added 11 rebounds and five assists. Derek Hart tossed in 12 points, going 4-for-6 from the field, and Tom Nuttle added 11 points. For SUNY Canton, Sam Annorh had 18 points, but shot just 4-for-16 from the field, while adding in four steals, and Romario Fletcher tossed in 14 points and seven boards.
