Loggins Scores 24 In Clarkson Women's Basketball Opener

Oswego, NY - Saturday began a new era in women's basketball, and the Clarkson Golden Knights seem to like the changes as they came away with a 61-49 win over Oswego State in the season-opener.

Across divisions, the NCAA has altered the game considerably this season in terms of time as all games will now be played in four 10-minute quarters as opposed to two 20-minute halves.

After giving up the first point of the game, Clarkson went on an 8-0 run in just three-plus minutes to take the lead, but Oswego would recover and gain a one-point advantage on a 3-pointer from Taylor Sorell with just 14 seconds to go in the first period. Clarkson trailed by three in the early going of the second, but tied the game at 20-20 with 2:56 to go in the second and found itself up by five following a 3-pointer from Devin Sorell with 1:44 remaining. Oswego would close to within one at the half, but that was as close as the Lakers would get for the rest of the game.

Clarkson enjoyed a 19-12 advantage in the third quarter, turning a one-point lead into a double-figure lead in a stretch of just three minutes, capping off the run with a three-point play by Ashley Loggins, who converted a lay up and the ensuring free throw on the foul. Oswego would pull to within five a minute later (4:22), but Clarkson would make push the game to at least a three-possession separation for the rest of the afternoon, finishing things off with a 12-point win.

Loggins started her season off right with 24 points (9-for-20 shooting) and 13 rebounds to go along with five steals. Loggins' five steals were surprisingly not even the most on the team as Clarkson recorded 19 overall in the game, led by Stephanie Grobe's six thefts. Grobe also tossed in 17 points (8-for-13) shooting while Devin Sorell had a solid line with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals. Madison Shea also put up several crooked numbers with six points, four boards, three assists and four steals. Oswego State was led by Mary Mazzella's double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Ameele led the Lakers with 14 points.
