Clarkson Off to Best Start in 24 Years After 6-2 Win over Western Michigan

Junior A.J. Fossen scored two goals and assisted on another and senior Pat Megannety also collected three points on a goal and two assists to highlight the Clarkson University Hockey team's convincing 6-2 victory over Western Michigan before a sellout crowd of 3,282 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

The Golden Knights, who defeated the Broncos of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference 4-2 on Friday night, are off to their best start since the 1991-92 campaign with a 5-1 overall record.

Postgame audio from head Coach Casey Jones

In a fairly even opening 20 minutes Clarkson grabbed a one-goal lead with the help of late score by junior defenseman James de Haas. With just 1.4 seconds remaining in the first period, de Haas connected on a blast from the point that found its way through a maze of players in front and past the Western Michigan goaltender. Junior Jordan Boucher and Fossen assisted.

The Broncos opened the scoring with a power-play marker from Kyle Novak at 2:16, but the Green and Gold came back to tie the game with their own power-play tally. Skating on a 5-on-3 advantage, Fossen, positioned at the top of the crease, tapped in a pass out of the corner by sophomore Sam Vigneault at 5:40. Bouchard also assisted.

Clarkson dominated in the middle frame tacking on three more goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead through 40 minutes.

Senior Christian Powers started the offensive outburst at 5:25. Powers took a pass from Megannety in the neutral zone and fired in a rising shot from the top of the right circle for his second goal of the season. Sophomore defenseman Terrance Amorosa also assisted.

The Knights made the most of a five-minute penalty to the Broncos late in the stanza, connecting twice.  Megannety knocked in a rebound off a shot by senor defenseman Paul Geiger at 16:46 with sophomore Janick Asselin also assisting.

Fossen tallied his second of the game and nation-leading fifth power-play marker of the season at 17:04, redirecting a shot by sophomore defenseman Kelly Summers. Sophomore Sam Vigneault also set up the goal.

Freshman Marly Quince built the Knights' lead to 6-1 midway through the final frame with his first collegiate goal at 12:57, knocking in a bouncing puck off a shot by Megannety. Powers also assisted.

The Broncos got a late goal by Sheldon Dries at 13:43 to close out the scoring.

Western Michigan outshot Clarkson 30-29. Junior Steve Perry made 25 saves, including a season-high 13 in the first period, on 27 shots through 54 minutes. Classmate Ville Runola played the final six minutes, turning aside all three shots he faced.

The Knights are off next weekend before opening ECAC Hockey play when they host Rensselaer and Union at Cheel on November 6-7.
