Clarkson Completes Season-Opening Sweep at Cheel

Another solid 60-minute effort from the Clarkson University Hockey team led to a 4-1 victory over Niagara on Saturday night and capped off a weekend sweep of Atlantic Hockey opponents at Cheel Arena to start the 2015-16 campaign.

The Golden Knights, who shut out RIT 6-0 on Friday, will look to improve upon their 2-0 start when they take to the road next weekend for more non-conference action, playing at Hockey East foes Merrimack and the University of New Hampshire. Clarkson begins ECAC Hockey play in early November.

For the second straight night, the Green and Gold received a balanced effort as four different Knights scored goals and eight different players recorded at least one point. Clarkson outshot the Purple Eagles (0-2) 45-17. Junior Steve Perry was called upon to make just 16 saves in the Clarkson goal.

With plenty of momentum after last night's win over RIT, the Knights came out with a dominating first-period effort against Niagara, outshooting the Purple Eagles 23-4 in the stanza. Junior Jordan Boucher tallied his first goal of the year to give the Knights the early lead. Boucher finished off a pass across the slot from linemate, sophomore Brett Gervais, scoring from the left circle at 4:59. Junior defenseman James de Haas also earned an assist.

Niagara got on the scoreboard early in the middle frame when Nick Farmer knocked in a rebound during a scrum in front at 2:20 to tie the game.

The Knights, however, came back late in the stanza with a three-goal spurt to take a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Sophomore Sam Vigneault tapped in a shot from the side of the net off a pass from junior A.J. Fossen while on the power play at 13:34 to put the Green and Gold back on top.  de Haas picked up his second assist of the night to start the scoring play.

Two scores in a 72-second span gave the Knights a three-goal cushion heading into the final period. Senior defenseman Kevin Tansey scored his first of the year off assists from junior Troy Josephs and Vigneault at 16:16. Gervais followed with his first of the year at 17:28 with classmate Nic Pierog assisting.

The Knights were strong in specialty teams play, going 1-of-3 on the power play, while killing off all three Niagara man-advantage opportunities.
