Clarkson Displays Complete Effort in 8-0 Win Over Queens

The Clarkson University Hockey team got ready for the 2014-15 regular season with a complete all-around effort on Sunday as the Golden Knights defeated Queen's University 8-0 in an exhibition game before 1,689 fans at Cheel Arena.
 
Seven different players scored for the Green and Gold and the three Clarkson goaltenders combined for the shutout as the Knights improved their record against Canadian University foes at Cheel to 16-2.
 
The Knights officially open their 93rd season of play next weekend in Western New York, playing at Niagara and RITin 7:00 p.m. gameson Friday and Saturday.
 
Clarkson outshot the Gaels 38-15 and was near perfect in specialty teams play, going 5-of-8 on the power play while killing off all five of Queen's man-advantage opportunities.
 
Junior Pat Megannety (Oakville, ONT) led the way offensively with a pair of goals. Senior Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) and sophomore defenseman James de Haas (Mississauga, ONT) both tallied a goal and two assists.


After leading 1-0 through the opening 20 minutes, Clarkson took control in the second period with a six-goal outburst.
 
Junior assistant captain Jeff DiNallo (Aurora, ONT) gave Clarkson a 1-0 first period lead, connecting on the Knights' first power play of the game with a hard shot from the right circle at 16:52. de Haas (Mississauga, ONT) and freshman blueline partner Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT) assisted.

Clarkson blew the game open in the middle frame with its six-figure total, including two tallies in the final thirty second of the period.
 
Freshman Brett Gervais (Corona, CA) started the scoring in the second, knocking in a rebound off a shot by classmate Nic Pierog (Georgetown, ONT) at 1:51. Sophomore defenseman Bryan Sinz (Anchorage, AK) also assisted.

de Haas made it 3-0 with a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 6:13. Zarbo and DiNallo assisted.  At 13:24, freshman defenseman Terrence Amorosa (Kirkland, QUE) connected on a blast from the top of the slot with Zarbo and senior James Howden (Edgeley, SASK) picking up assists. Megannety knocked in a pass in from de Haas at 17:00 to make it 5-0.

In an 11-second span late in the final 30 seconds, the Knights scored twice to build a 7-0 lead. Sophomore Perry D'Arrisso (Mississauga, ONT) and Megannety connected at 19:37 and 19:48, respectively to give the Green and Gold a commanding lead after 40 minutes.

Zarbo closed out the scoring in final frame with the Knights' fifth power-play score at 4:02. Sophomore Troy Josephs (Whitby, ONT) and freshman Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE) assisted.

Sophomore Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA), classmate Ville Runola (Raisio, Finland) and junior Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) each saw a period of action, making five, four and six saves, respectively in the shutout.
