A thrilling attempt at a comeback fell just short for the Clarkson University Hockey team on Saturday night before a Parents' Weekend crowd of 3,346 at Cheel Arena as the Golden Knights fell to Bowling Green 5-4 in the second game of their non-league weekend series.

Clarkson and Bowling Green (4-1-1) skated to a 2-2 tie on Friday night.

Trailing 5-1 early in the second period, Clarkson finally found its game midway through the middle frame and rallied back with three unanswered goals, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.

Freshman Dylan Gareau (Richmond, ONT) started the Green and Gold's comeback bid, scoring his first two collegiate goals. Late in the second period, Gareau got the Knights back on the scoreboard with his first career goal at 17:05. Sophomore A.J. Fossen (Maple Grove, MN) and senior defenseman James Howden (Edgeley, SASK) assisted, making it 5-2 after 40 minutes.

Gareau scored again early in the final stanza, flipping in a wrist shot from the right circle after assists from classmate Ben Dalpe (Paris, ONT) and Fossen at 2:17. Clarkson continued to pressure and made it a one-goal game at 15:40 when sophomore defenseman James de Haas (Mississauga, ONT) powered in a shot from the top of the circles after a great shift by senior Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) to set up the goal. Sophomore Troy Josephs (Whitby, ONT) also assisted.

Clarkson, which outshot the Falcons 15-3 over the final 20 minutes, had numerous attempts to tie the game, but could just not convert despite some solid play around the Bowling Green crease.

Clarkson fell into a three-goal deficit after the opening 20 minutes as Bowling Green outscored the Knights 4-1 in the first period.

The nation's leading goal scorer, Kevin Dufour got the Falcons rolling with his eighth tally of the year when he finished off a long pass from Dajon Mingo with a breakaway score at 4:12.

The Knights, who have struggled on the power play, got a man-advantage marker to tie the game at 6:57. Zarbo, positioned at the top of the crease, scored his team-high third goal of the season, tipping in a shot from the point by junior captain Paul Geiger (Stouffville, ONT). Sophomore Perry D'Arrisso (Mississauga, ONT) also assisted.

Bowling Green, however, came right back with its own power-play goal to start a three-goal burst.

Ben Murphy scored from the slot after taking a pass out of the corner from Brandon Hawkins at 12:47. Mitchell McLain made it 3-1 in the visitors' favor with a goal off a Bowling Green faceoff win at 14:12. Tyler Spezia followed at 17:46 to give the Falcons a commanding leader entering the first intermission.

The Falcons built their margin to 5-1 early in the second on a goal by Pierre-Luc Mercier at 4:27.

Clarkson outshot BGSU 34-23. The Knights went 1-of-4 on the power play, while the Falcons were 1-of-3 with the man-advantage.

Sophomore Ville Runola (Raisio, Finland) played the final 40 minutes in the Clarkson goal and finished with 11 saves on 12 shots. Classmate Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA) started in net for the Knights and made seven saves while allowing four goals in the opening 20 minutes

The Knights, who stand at 2-3-1, will close out the season-opening, non-league portion of their schedule next weekend with a home-and-home series with archrival St. Lawrence, playing the Saints in Canton on Friday before hosting them at Cheel on Saturday.
