Knights Split On Day Two of Nazareth Invitational

Rochester, NY - A disastrous first set against Fredonia quickly turned into a victory for the Clarkson University Volleyball team, but the opposite was true in the Golden Knights second match of the day when #13 Cortland rallied to beat the Green and Gold in four sets at the Nazareth Invitational.

The Golden Knights moved to 5-3 on the season and will play in the New Paltz Invitational next weekend.

Clarkson struggled mightily in its first set against Fredonia State. The Knights dropped the opener 25-7, but then made short work of its first SUNYAC opponent of the day, taking down the Blue Devils in the next three sets 25-21, 25-15, 25-15. Junior Erika Chin (Katy, TX) led the team with 19 digs defensively and then headed a strong serving attack with five aces. Kirstie Shurie (LaCanada, CA) nearly recorded a double-double with 17 assists and nine digs, while Lani Durio (Austin, TX) accomplished the feat with 12 assists and 10 digs. Victoria Kirkemo (Englewood, CO) added in 12 kills and nine digs, while Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO) kicked in nine kills as well.

Against the Red Dragons, Clarkson nearly doubled up the 13th-ranked team in the country in the first set, taking it 25-13. However, Cortland State flipped the switch in the next three sets and won 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 to remain unbeaten. Senior Bailey Walker (Centennial, CO) had nine kills and no errors on 23 swings while Aishvina Arasu (Brea, CA) led the team with 11 kills while adding in four blocks. Adrienne Walker had seven blocks and Kirkemo led from the serving line with three aces to go along with her 12 digs. Shurie had a double-double with 14 assists and 16 digs and Durio added 15 assists.
