Potsdam, NY – A career-high 21 points came from junior Jonathan Hood (Cortlandt Manor, NY), but the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team struggled with turnovers against constant pressure from the opposition as Hobart College came away with a 67-58 victory over the Golden Knights Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights split their second straight weekend in league player, falling to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in conference games, while Hobart improved to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in league contests.
Utilizing full-court pressure, the Statesmen forced nine first-half turnovers and many ill-advised shots by Clarkson in the first half, maintaining a small lead for most of the period. Hobart was also able to find the open shooters on the perimeter, shooting 4-for-8 from outside.
Sophomore guard Felix Llanos (Queens, NY) led all scorers with eight points in the first half as all 23 points by the Knights came from their five starters. Hobart got 25 of its 33 points from its starters as five different players, including reserve Greg Stern, had at least five points for the Statesmen.
Starting in the second half, the Knights started getting offensive contributions from their bench as Tyler Barron (Burlington, VT) and George Koduah (Accra, Ghana) scored on back-to-back possessions, pulling Clarkson to within three points, 41-38. The Knights kept the gap to three for a handful of possessions, but midway through the period, Hobart enjoyed a 10-2 run over a three-minute span to take a double-digit lead with less than seven minutes remaining.
Down the stretch, the Knights were unable to get back to within striking distance as Hobart freshman Stefan Thompson kept the margin too difficult to overcome, shooting 10-for-12 from the free throw line for a game-high 21 points.
Hood led Clarkson with 21 points and 10 rebounds, going 8-for-13 from the field and 5-for-5 from the line. Felix Llanos added 13 points, while Brandon Linton (Queens, NY) had 8 points and 7 assists. Senior Elson Pickering (Brooklyn, NY) also had 10 rebounds and 3 blocks.
For the Statesmen, Thompson had his 21 points, as well as 3 assists and 3 steals. Matt Pebole came away with 15 points and 8 rebounds, and Tim Llewellyn had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.
