Schenectady, NY - Following a rough shooting performance in the first half, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team hoped that its shots would fall in the second 20 minutes, much the way they did Friday night against Skidmore. However, the shots didn't find their way in this time around and the Golden Knights suffered a 78-58 loss to Union College Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights fell to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League, while Union moved to 7-8 and 3-2. There is currently a six-way tie for first in the Liberty League through five games, with Clarkson and the Dutchmen making up two of the six teams. Clarkson will look to hold on to first, with a little less company, next week when it hosts Hamilton and Hobart.
Trailing by just a point four minutes into the contest, the Knights went absolutely frigid from the field as Union went on a 22-3 run, including a 16-0 push, that had Clarkson trailing by 20 points, 29-9 with 10 minutes to go in the half. The Green and Gold simply could not find the touch, as the team was held to just one made field goal over the course of seven and a half minutes. Elson Pickering (Brooklyn, NY) was the lone standout for Clarkson, scoring 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting, but the rest of the Knights struggled to shoot 5-for-19, making only a pair of three-pointers in the process.
On Friday, the Knights recovered and scored 51 points in the second half, but a repeat performance was not to be, as Union nearly doubled up Clarkson (60-33) midway through the period. Five players finished in double figures for the Dutchmen, led by Joey Lokitis, who produced a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Overall, Pickering finished with a double-double of his own with 19 points and 10 boards while Keith Murray (Queens, NY) added 11 points. Clarkson was outrebounded 48-33 and shot just 6-for-27 from beyond the 3-point arc for the game.
