Troy, NY - Through three innings of each game, the Clarkson University Baseball team found itself in the lead, but a pair of late-inning rallies gave Rensselaer a doubleheader sweep of Clarkson, 7-3 and 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at Robison Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-10 overall and 5-4 in the Liberty League, while Rensselaer improved to 18-4 overall and 11-0 in conference games.

In game one, Clarkson got on top first, scoring a run in the third inning. Freshman Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY), who went 3-for-4 in the opener, plated Austin Pitkin (Dexter, NY) to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead. RPI responded with two-run homers in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, taking a 7-1 lead overall through six frames. The Knights picked up two more in the top of the seventh when Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY) scored on a single from Pitkin. Coleman then drove in Pitkin with another single before the Knights late rally came up short.

The Knights had 11 hits in the first game while holding the Red Hawks to just six. Coleman had three hits for Clarkson, while Giordano and Matt Curry (Richland, NY) each had two hits. Greg Chojecki (West Seneca, NY) took the loss for the Knights, but allowed just two hits over four-plus innings.

In game two, Clarkson again jumped out front in the third inning when Matt Curry received a two-out walk, followed by a home run from Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY), his fifth bomb of the season. Rensselaer tied the game up in the fifth inning on a two-run single from Andrew Krushelnyski. The Red Hawks scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home rum from Jim Devine.

The two teams combined for just 12 hits in the second game. Only Clarkson sophomore Garrett Russell (Lake George, NY) had a multi-hit game for either team, going 2-for-3.

Austin Pitkin had a short, but effective outing for the Knights, going four innings and allowing three hits while striking out four.
