Seniors Jon Cathcart (Homer, NY) and Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY) scored two goals and one assist apiece to pace the Clarkson University offense in the Golden Knights’ 8-4 Men's Lacrosse victory over SUNY Potsdam on a blustery Wednesday afternoon.
Clarkson, which improves its record to 2-0, will travel down south for its annual Spring Break trip and will play national powerhouse Cortland State on Saturday afternoon in Florida.
The Knights surrendered the opening goal to Potsdam (0-1), but then ran off four straight scores to hold a 4-1 lead early in the second. Hoey and freshman Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) tallied in the first quarter, followed by senior Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) and Cathcart early in the second stanza. After the Bears made it 4-2, Cathcart and Hoey traded goals with Potsdam late in the half to give the Green and Gold a 6-4 advantage through 30 minutes.
After a scoreless third period, the Knights sealed the win on the Bears’ home field with fourth-quarter goals by senior Tom Ross (Adams, NY) and Gibbons. Ross’s goal came just 1:47 into the final frame, while Gibbons, with his second goal, connected for Clarkson’s lone man-up goal in nine chances midway through the period.
Clarkson out shot Potsdam 35-22. Senior John Svoren (Hamburg, NY) made 5 saves in the Knights’ crease. The Bears controlled groundballs 29-23.
