Potsdam, NY – Junior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) scored a pair of goals and classmate Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) was solid in net with 16 saves as the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team earned an impressive 4-0 shutout win over the University of Connecticut in front of 404 fans Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 3-0-1 and will travel to Vermont next weekend for a pair of games against the Catamounts. Connecticut finished the weekend with a split, moving to 1-2-1 on the young season.
Shortly after the Huskies were whistled for too many players on the ice, Clarkson was able to capitalize with the man-advantage. Junior Melissa Waldie recorded her third goal of the season when she was able to find a hole in the Connecticut defense from the right circle, scoring 30 seconds after the power play began at 13:03. Senior Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) was awarded the assist.
The Knights scored an even-strength goal early in the second period to provide a little breathing space between them and the Huskies as Selina flipped a shot from the center of the right circle over the goalie’s glove side at 4:09 of the second frame. Freshmen Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, Alberta) and Danielle Skirrow (Trenton, ONT) each earned assists on the goal.
An impressive individual effort from senior transfer Dominique Thibault (L’Original, ONT) gave the Knights a 3-0 lead late in the second period. Thibault skated through the slot and held off a defender while backhanding a shot top-shelf on the goalie’s glove side just outside the crease for an unassisted goal, her second tally of the season.
Clarkson continued to put on offensive pressure to start the third period and the effort paid dividends as Waldie scored her second goal of the game from almost the exact same spot as her goal in the first period, depositing the puck from the near circle. Senior Tegan Schroeder (Lumsden, SASK) picked up the assist.
Clarkson owned a 27-16 advantage in shots and was 1-for-4 on the power play while Connecticut was scoreless in two extra-man chances. Dahm has 16 saves while for the Knights and Alexandra Garcia made 23 stops for the Huskies
