A four-game winning streak for the Clarkson University Hockey team came to an end Friday night as Colgate University handed the Golden Knights a 3-1 loss before 2,836 fans in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights (7-14-4, 5-7-1), will look to get back on the winning track when they host league-leader Cornell in a 7:00 p.m. game on Saturday.
Sophomore Brian Day (Danvers, MA) tallied twice to lift Colgate to its first win since early January, snapping a five-game losing stretch. The Raiders (7-13-5, 2-8-3) won their third straight game in Potsdam as they picked up their first ECAC Hockey victory since November 7.
Day broke a 1-1 tie with Colgate’s second power-play tally of the game early in the third period. Just 22 seconds into the Raiders’ fifth man-advantage opportunity of the contest, Day connected off assists from junior David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, ONT) and senior defenseman Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, BC) for the game-winner at 4:09.

Colgate took a 1-0 first period lead early in the contest when freshman Matt Firman (Fayetteviile, NY) tipped in a pass at the top of the crease by senior linemate Tom Riley (Ottawa, ONT) for his first collegiate point at 1:58. Senior defenseman Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, WI) also assisted. The Raiders, who skated on three power plays in the opening 20 minutes, outshot the Green and Gold 10-8 in the period.

Freshman Julien Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) fired a shot off the far post at the eight-minute mark, followed by a shot in close by classmate Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY) that was stopped by Colgate’s junior netminder Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, OH) at 7:00. Sophomore Lauri Tuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland) also had a chance in close with three minutes to go in the period, but his shot was deflected over the Colgate net.
After killing off four straight Colgate power plays through the first 30 minutes, Clarkson tied it on its first man-advantage of the game late in the second period. Senior Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) connected on a shot from the right circle, one-timing a pass from sophomore Matt Beca (Mississauga, ONT) for his team-high 10th goal of the season at 14:19. Senior Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) also assisted.
