Vassar Defeats Clarkson, 75-71

January 23, 2009

Poughkeepsie, NY - A 3-pointer by junior Brandon Linton (Queens, NY) gave the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team a chance to end Vassar's come-from-behind bid Friday night, but the Golden Knights were unable to pull ahead in the final moments, falling 75-71 in Liberty League action Friday night.

The Golden Knights fell to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League, while Vassar moved to 6-9 and 1-3. Clarkson looks to rebound on Saturday against Rensselaer.

The Golden Knights led throughout most of the first half and extended their lead to as many as eight points in the second half. Leading by seven with just over eight minutes to go, Clarkson found itself on the short end of a 15-7 run as Vassar took its first lead of the second half with less than two minutes to go in the contest. Trailing by four in the final minute, Clarkson twice was able to recover and bring the game back to a single possession match (including a Brandon Linton 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining), but a second 3-pointer from Linton, which would have tied the score up with just a few seconds to go, couldn't find the mark.

Linton scored a season-high 22 points, shooting 9-for-15 from the floor, and added in four assists. Junior Elson Pickering (Brooklyn, NY) tossed in 14 more, going 6-for-9 from the floor in 20 minutes off the bench. The rest of the team shot a combined 12-for-35 from the field.

For Vassar, Caleb McGraw scored 22, going 7-for-14 from the field and making four long-range shots. Lenny Holt added 14, including several clutch free throws late, and Matt Nunn scored 12. Vassar shot 15-for-17 from the free throw line for the game.
