Potsdam, NY - For the second time in three days, senior Katherine Gawrys (Ballston Spa, NY) won three events and classmate Kristen Larsen (Fort Edward, NY) broke her own 200 breaststroke record to lead the Clarkson University Swim team in a dual meet against Potsdam State Friday night at Maxcy Hall.
The Golden Knights' men's team won handily, 138-78, while the women narrowly won 115-105 despite dominating the individual events.
For the women, Gawrys won the 200 butterfly (2:23.90) and both the 500 freestyle (5:33.44) and 1000 freestyle (11:36.20). Larsen cut a half second off of her own record time, swimming the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.50, and she also won the 200 individual medley (2:23.86). Also winning a pair of events was freshman Emma Bonan (Queensbury, NY), who claimed first place in the 200 freestyle (2:04.87) and 100 freestyle (57.42). Sophomore Nicole Pera (Jamison, PA) also finished first in the 200 backstroke (2:19.15).
On the men's side, freshman Mike Rowe (Glenville, NY) was the only swimmer to take two events, winning the 200 freestyle (1:50.12) and 200 backstroke (1:58.89), just a half second off his own school record. Classmate Tim Walrath (Fulton, NY) won the 500 freestyle (5:03.37), and second-year swimmers Bob Stevens (Lakewood, NY) and Brendan Hofler (Glen Gardner, NJ) each won a single event, Stevens claiming the 50 freestyle (23.08) and Hofler winning the 1000 freestyle (10:33.01). Seniors Matt Ulsh (Rochester, MN), Steve Ritter (Johnson City, NY), and Evan Pedersen (Geneva, NY) also won individual races. Ulsh finished first in the 200 butterfly (2:02.53), Ritter won the 200 breaststroke title (2:29.15), and Pedersen touched the pad first in the 200 individual medley (2:12.16).
