Hobart Defeats Clarkson, 5-2

September 26, 2008

Geneva, NY - At first glance, a 5-2 loss by the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team to sixth-ranked Hobart doesn't look too impressive, but considering the Golden Knights played down a man for the final 82 minutes, Friday afternoon's defeat is far from disappointing.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the Liberty League while Hobart stayed flawless at 8-0-0 and 1-0-0. Clarkson visists Hamilton on Saturday.

In the first eight minutes, Clarkson was hit with a red card as sophomore Jeremy Toscano (Brockport, NY) was whistled for the infraction. Down a player for the remainder of the game against a tough team, Clarkson quickly rallied and actually went up a goal when sophomore Andrew Ensinger (Rochester, NY) scored his second goal of the season from junior Matias Pena (Port Washington, NY) at 13:46. Five minutes later Hobart scored off a corner kick and the two teams remained knotted up at 1-1 for the next 20-plus minutes. It wasn't until the 41st minute that Hobart broke through with a goal from Matt Schwartz.

The second half was not as hospitable for the Knights as the Statesmen scored three times from the 51st to the 81st minute, with two coming from Grant Morrison. Less than a minute after falling behind 5-1, Clarkson's Cale Samuel (Mississauga, ONT) scored for the third time this year on a penalty kick.

Hobart out shot Clarkson 26-9, including a 17-4 edge in the second half when the Knights were clearly fatigued from chasing extra players around the field. The Statesmen also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks, including a 4-1 lead in the final 45 minutes.

Senior Mike St. Croix (Watertown, NY) made six saves for Clarkson and Pete Van Dellon made four saves for Hobart.
