Knights Fall to Union, 56-55

February 9, 2008

Schenectady, NY - Delon McAllister made just the second of his two free throws with three seconds remaining, but that was enough for Union to pull off the upset over the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, 56-55, Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights finished the weekend with a Liberty League split, moving to 8-13 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Union swept its weekend series and is now 7-14 and 3-7. Clarkson will finish out its home schedule next weekend against Hamilton and Hobert.

In a repeat of the women's game, the Knights were shutout for a small portion of the first half, trailing 13-0 early on before the team rallied to come back for a four-point lead, 27-23, at the conclusion of the first half. Neither team shot well in the first half, as the Knights were just 6-for-22 and Union was 8-for-24.

The second half saw the Dutchmen come out of their shooting funk, running off a 14-4 streak midway through the half to take a seven-point lead. Clarkson slowly chipped away and actually took a 54-52 lead with under three minutes remaining in the contest. A lay up from Union's Kyle Grimm tied the contest up, and Clarkson missed its final four field goal attempts over the final three minutes. What proved to be the difference were free throws: Union made two of its four attempts, while Clarkson made only one of its two tries.

Grimm finished with a game-high 16 points for Union and Kyle Goldstein added in 14 points for the Dutchmen. Clarkson's Keith Murray (Queens, NY) scored a team-high 14 points while Brandon Linton (Queens, NY) contributed 9 points, 6 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
