Three times the Clarkson University Hockey team overcame one-goal deficits to earn a hard-fought 3-3 tie on the road against Colgate in ECAC Hockey action at Starr Rink in Hamilton, NY on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who lost 4-1 to nationally-ranked Cornell in Ithaca on Friday, own a 2-8-4 overall record and are 1-6-1 in league play. Clarkson, will take this week off for final exams, and then return to action looking to break out of a nine-game winless slide (0-7-2) when it plays a two-game non-league series at Bowling Green on December 19-20.

Senior Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) led the Knights with two goals. Junior Lauria Tuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland) also scored in Clarkson’s fifth overtime game of the season. Colgate out shot the Knights 33-29, but freshman goaltender Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) was solid in the Clarkson goal, making 30 saves, including several key stops in an 11-save third-period effort. He also turned aside all five shots he faced in the five-minute overtime period.

Colgate, which was coming off a 5-2 loss to St. Lawrence the previous night, jumped out to the early lead with Brian Day’s power-play marker just 1:55 into the contest. Clarkson came back with a power-play tally by Tuohimaa at 10:43. Positioned at the side of the net, Tuohimaa redirected a shot from the point by sophomore Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT) for his team-high 8th goal of the season. Freshman Julien Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) also assisted on the goal which came with just 27 seconds left in the man-advantage. Twenty seconds later, however, the Raiders regained the lead as Francois Brisebois scored at 11:03 to give Colgate the 2-1 advantage after the opening 20 minutes.

The Knights wasted little time in tying the score 2-2 when D’Alvise knocked in a bouncing puck off of freshman Jake Morley’s (Ogdensburg, NY) shot just 25 seconds into the middle frame. At 9:17 of the second, David McIntyre put the home team on top once again, at 3-2.

With 39 seconds remaining in the period, D’Alvise connected for his 6th goal of the season, one-timing a pass from senior co-captain Phil Paquet (Quebec City, QUE) from the right circle for a 4-on-3 power-play marker to knot the game at three-all. Junior Matt Beca (Mississauga, ONT) also assisted.

The Knights were strong in specialty teams play with a 2-for-5 effort on the power play while killing off four of Colgate’s five man-advantage opportunities.
