A six-game winning streak for the Clarkson University Hockey team over Harvard came to an end in Cambridge, MA on Friday night as the Golden Knights fell to the Crimson 5-1 at Bright Hockey Center.
The Green and Gold, at 2-3-2 overall and 1-2 in ECAC Hockey play, will look to break out of a two-game losing slump when they play at Dartmouth on Saturday night, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
“I thought we had a lot of opportunities and did not give them a lot,” stated Clarkson head coach George Roll. “We had a couple of breakdowns that were costly. It seemed any mistake we made ended up in the back of our net. I was pleased with our effort tonight. I thought it was better than last weekend. We played hard and did some good things. Right now we just can’t seem to find the back of the net. We just have to pull up our bootstraps and keep working.”
The Knights fell into a 3-0 hole to start the first and could not recover as the Crimson defeated Clarkson for the first time since February 25, 2006
The Crimson’s first goal came off a Clarkson turnover in the Knights’ end when Michael Del Mauro tallied at 9:46. The home team went on top by two just five seconds into a power play on Nick Coskern’s man-advantage goal at 14:34. Harvard scored again with Joe Smith finding the back of the net at 16:20.
Sophomore Lauri Tuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland) put the Knights on the scoreboard with 35 seconds left in the first. Tuohimaa snapped off a quick wrist shot from the slot for his team-high fifth goal of the season, connecting on a pass behind the net from classmate Brandon DeFazio (Oakville, ONT). Sophomore Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT) also assisted.
Harvard, however, did not let up adding a late goal in the second and another power-play marker early in the third to gain the final four-goal victory.
Clarkson out shot Harvard 24-23. Freshman Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) posted 18 stops for the Knights. Clarkson was 0-of-6 on the power play, while the Crimson tallied twice in two man-advantage opportunities.
