May 7, 2007

Class of 2007

Potsdam, NY - A difficult season came to an end on a positive note for the Clarkson University Baseball team on Monday afternoon as the Golden Knights defeated Oswego State 4-2 in a non-league game at Snell Field.

The Golden Knights concluded the season at 7-24 overall, ending a four-game losing streak, while Oswego State fell to 14-12 overall.

Clarkson started the scoring in the third inning when Gerald Stothers (Fort Myers, FL) singled up the middle when a tough hop was mishandled by the shortstop, driving home Matt Curry (Richland, NY). Ralph Rizzo (Bohemia, NY) followed with a two-run double to give Clarkson a 3-0 advantage.

Oswego responded with a run in the fifth and another in the seventh to cut the lead to a single run. An error sent home the first run for the Lakers in the fifth inning and Tom Farrell delivered a sacrifice fly that drove home Mike Levy in the seventh.

The Knights earned an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Rizzo turned around the first pitch from reliever Adam Harendza for a double off the fence that plated pinch-runner Sal DiSanza (Elbridge, NY).

Rizzo finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Stothers went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Knights. Nick Perioli went 2-for-3 with a pair of bunt singles.

Brady Torbitt (Fulton, NY) went six strong innings to earn his first collegiate victory, allowing just four hits and walking one. Ted Cervini (Mechanicville, NY), Trevor Johnson (Ogdensburg, NY) and David Potter (Crown Point, NY) each pitched an inning of relief to close out the win with Potter picking up his first save of the year. Justin Horbal took the loss for the Lakers, allowing eight hits in seven and two-thirds.
