Poughkeepsie, NY - Vassar may have scored the first goal of the game on Saturday afternoon, but the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team tallied the next 11 scores as the Golden Knights cruised to a 12-5 Liberty League win over the Brewers.
The Golden Knights improved to 3-0 in conference and 5-7 overall with the win while Vassar fell to 1-11 overall and 0-4 in league play. The Knights face fellow conference unbeaten St. Lawrence, ranked 10th in the country, at home on Wednesday.
The Brewers scored the first goal of the game while playing a man up with just three minutes remaining in the first quarter. However, the Knights scored two minutes later and then continued to hold Vassar scoreless for the next 18 minutes (20:30 total) as they built a double-digit lead by the start of the fourth quarter. Clarkson held a 32-19 advantage in shots in the game, but was even more impressive in the first half with a 16-5 edge.
Sophomore Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) led the Knights in scoring with four goals and an assist for five points, giving him 45 points on the season and 97 over the past two seasons, the highest two-season total since Nick Masterpole recorded 108 points over the course of the 2000-01 campaigns. Classmate Tom Ross (Adams, NY) added four goals and fellow sophomore Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY) added a goal and two assists for three points. Jon Cathcart (Homer, NY) scored two goals and Erik Hilfinger (Ann Arbor, MI) accounted for the Knights other goal. Junior Corey O'Connor (Sandwich, MA) was devastating on face offs, controlling 12 of the 14 draws during the contest. Eric Wolery (Cincinnati, OH) made two saves through the first three quarters and John Svoren (Canisius, NY) stopped two shots in the fourth quarter.
