Schenectady, NY - Erick "Cheese" Vigansky (Kenosha, WI) scored a game-high 20 ponits on 7-for-11 shooting for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, but the Union Dutchmen shot above 50 percent for the game and held off the Golden Knights 74-69 on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights finished the regular season with a record of 14-11 overall and 5-9 in conference and will now wait to see if they can gain a post-season ECAC bid. Union improved to 11-13 and 8-6 with the win to earn the final Liberty League playoff spot.
The two teams went back and forth for the entire game with neither team able to maintain much of an advantage. Clarkson ran its largest lead to six points midway through the second half, but a quick 7-0 run by the Dutchmen sent the game headlong into a tussle down the stretch. Neither team could push the lead much because of solid shooting on both sides. Union finished the game at 51.0 percent from the field (26-for-51) while Clarkson shot 44.2 percent (23-for-52).
Vigansky led all scorers with 20 points while EJ Harrison (Troy, NY) contributed 16 points and three steals for Clarkson. Sophomore Elson Pickering (Brooklyn, NY) also added 14 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the floor.
Union had five players score in double figures, led by Steve Madej's 19 points. Madej shot 7-for-11 from the floor and was even more impressive beyond the 3-point arc, shooting 5-for-7. Joe Mackey also added 14 points and Kyle Grimm produced an excellent all-around game with 10 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
