LSSU Denies Clarkson's Bid for a Sweep

October 27, 2007

After a near perfect effort in Friday’s 4-0 win at Lake Superior State, the Clarkson University Hockey team was on the opposite end of a solid outing on Saturday as the Lakers handed the Golden Knights a 5-1 defeat at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

Ranked 8th/9th in the country entering the weekend, Clarkson saw its winning streak come to a halt at four games. Standing at 4-2 overall, the Knights will resume ECAC Hockey play, and look to improve their 1-0 conference mark, this coming weekend at Cheel Arena when it hosts Harvard and Dartmouth.

Penalty troubles in the first period hindered the Knights’ effort at the start of Saturday’s game as the Green and Gold were sent to the box four times in the opening stanza. At 18:34, and seconds after a 5-on-3 power play ended for Lake Superior, the Lakers tallied on the man advantage with Nathan Perkovich connecting.

Lake Superior (1-2-1) came out strong to start the second, and made it 3-0 less than four minutes into the middle frame. Chad Nehring scored twenty-four seconds in, followed by Steven Kaunisto’s goal at 3:54. Dan Eves added a power-play goal at 17:54 to give the Lakers a commanding 4-0 lead through two periods.

Nehring connected for his second goal of the night late in the third for a 5-0 Lake Superior lead.

With 48 seconds left, senior David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) netted his first goal of the season to spoil the home team's shutout bid. Senior Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT) and freshman Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT) assisted.

Making his first NCAA appearance, sophomore goaltender Tim Potter (Bakersfield, CA) put in a respectable effort with 31 saves. Both team had 36 shots on net. Clarkson was 0-of-3 on the power play, while the Lakers went 3-of-8.
