A complete 60-minute effort, featuring two goals in both the first and third periods, and a solid effort by senior goaltender David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) lifted the Clarkson University Hockey team to a 4-0 win over Lake Superior State before 1,970 fans at Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, MI on Friday night.

Ranked 8th/9th in the country, the Golden Knights, who have won four straight to improve their record to 4-1, will faceoff against the Lakers (0-2-1) in the second game of the series on Saturday beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Leggio came through with his second shutout in the first five games of the season, and fifth career whitewash, with a 19-save effort, including eight stops in the second period.

Senior Steve Zalewski (New Hartford, NY) provided all the scoring Clarkson would need early in the first period when he finished off a passing combination from classmates David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) and Grant Clitsome (Gloucester, ONT) for a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 9:22. Late in the opening stanza, freshman Lauri Tuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland) made it 2-0. Tuohimaa picked up a loose puck just outside the crease and lifted a backhand up top for his second goal of the season at 15:04. Juniors Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) and Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) assisted.

After several excellent scoring opportunities came up short for the Golden Knights in a scoreless second period, Clarkson sealed its first road win of the year with a pair of goals over the final 20 minutes.

Senior captain Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT) tallied unassisted on a slapshot from along the right boards for his sixth career shorthanded marker at 6:26. D’Alvise closed out the scoring with his second goal of the season, a power-play marker at 12:41. Clitsome recorded his second assist of the game.

Clarkson posted 25 shots on goal, while allowing a season low 19 shots. The Knights finished 2-of-7 on the power play, while Lake Superior failed in five man-advantage attempts.
