Hanover, NH - Katie Weatherston scored two goals and added an assist as third-ranked Dartmouth College extended the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team's recent woes with a 4-1 win over the Golden Knights on Friday night.
The Golden Knights dropped their fifth game in the past six contests and fell to 14-11-2 overall and 6-8-1 in the ECACHL, holding onto the eighth spot in the conference standings. Third-ranked Dartmouth moved to 16-4-2 overall and 13-1-1. Clarkson's schedule doesn't get any easier on Saturday, as the Knights travel to take on fourth-ranked Harvard.
The first period saw a lot of action in the neutral zone, but nothing heavily threatened either goalie. Both teams had power play opportunities in the period, but could only muster up one shot on goal each. At the end of the first 20 minutes, the Big Green had the slight offensive advantage, leading 6-3 in shots.
The Big Green got on the board first midway through the second period Sarah Newnan blasted a shot from the blue line that was deflected by Weatherston who was positioned in front of the Clarkson net. Weatherston tipped the shot past Clarkson goalkeeper Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT), giving Dartmouth a 1-0 advantage. Dartmouth scored again just a minute later, this time on the power play as Weatherston deflected another shot past Hurley, this time coming originally from the stick of Cherie Piper. Sarah Parsons also assisted.
Clarkson ended the period down just a single goal, though, as Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) scored with just a second left on the clock. Lindsay Williams (Mississagua, ONT) and Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO) each earned assists.
Whatever momentum the Knights had going into the third period was quickly removed as Dartmouth out shot Clarkson 13-3 over the final 20 minutes, netting two more goals. Maggie Kennedy and Gillian Apps each scored goals five minutes apart midway through the frame to fit the finally tally.
Clarkson trailed in shots 31-16. Hurley finished with 27 saves while Carli Clemis made 15 saves for the Big Green.
