Knights Fall In Overtime to Vassar, 70-62

January 20, 2007

Potsdam, NY – For the second straight game, Vassar pulled out an overtime victory on the road as the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team dropped a 70-62 decision to the Brewers Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped their fourth consecutive Liberty League contest to fall to 10-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Vassar improved to 10-4 and 4-1.

After a tough two games on defense, by the normal standards of the Knights, Clarkson came out and buckled down on the defensive end in the first half against Vassar. For the first 10:40, the Brewers scored just two points, but the Knights were unable to take much advantage as they were only able to muster 10 points over the same time frame. Vassar quickly found its touch as the team went on an 11-1 run over the next three minutes. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, including an open court jumper from Lawrence Avitabile as time expired, making the score 19-19 at the break.

The second half was a complete opposite of the first as both teams were able to score on the inside and outside without much difficulty. Vassar proved more proficient as the half went on, extending its lead to double figures with nine minutes remaining. Over the next three and a half minutes, Clarkson went on a 14-4 run, with a 3-point play from Brandon Linton (Queens, NY) to tie the score at 51-51 with 5:27 remaining. A 3-pointer from EJ Harrison (Troy, NY) gave the Knights the lead, but Vassar stormed back as the Knights turned the ball over four times in a two-minute span to let the Brewers retake the lead. A pair of free throws from Brian Salanger (Syracuse, NY) sent the game to overtime for Clarkson, but Vassar outscored the Knights 10-2 in the extra frame and eased their way to the win.

Tyson Brazell shot 7-for-13 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the line to score a game-high 23 points, adding in seven rebounds and three steals. Avitabile added 18 points and 6 rebounds for the Brewers while Joe Davis contributed 13 points and 6 boards.

EJ Harrison scored a team-high 19 points for Clarkson, shooting 7-for-13 from the floor and a flawless 4-for-4 from the line. Salanger and Linton each added 13 points for the Knights.
