Knights See Five-Game Win Streak End at Hobart

January 13, 2007

Geneva, NY - Senior guard EJ Harrison (Troy, NY) scored a team-high 15 points and added in five steals, but the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Hobart as the Statesmen upset the Golden Knights 65-56 in a Liberty League contest Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play while Hobart improved to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League. Clarkson returns to host St. Lawrence on Tuesday in an important early-season conference match up.

After a Friday first half in which virtually everything went right for the Knights, nothing went well for Clarkson in Saturday's opening 20 minutes. The Knights, who went scoreless for the first 4:38 of the game, struggled from the floor in the first half, shooting just 7-for-22 from the field, including 2-for-10 from beyond the 3-point arc. In addition to the woeful shooting, the Knights were outrebounded by Hobart, 17-9. Despite their struggles, the Knights, who trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half, cut the Hobart advantage to 10, 32-22, at intermission.

In the second half, Clarkson continued its late first-half run and cut Hobart's lead to six points on two occasions, only to see the Hobart lead return to double-digits with 13 minutes remaining. Over the next five minutes, Clarkson cut into the Statesmen's advantage with a steady run culminating in a 3-point field goal by Brian Salanger (Syracuse, NY) to cut lead down to three points, 51-48. Hobart responded with an 8-0 run to return the lead to double-digits and Clarkson was unable to put much of a scare into the Statesmen for the remainder of the contest.

Harrison scored 15 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line, but the Hobart defense forced the senior guard into eight turnovers. Salanger added 13 points, shooting 4-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc. The Knights' offense struggled overall from the floor, ending the game just 17-for-52 (32.7 percent) from the field and 5-for-19 (26.7 percent) from the 3-point line. Hobart shot 19-for-43 (44.2 percent) and made 25 of its 33 free throw attempts.
