Saratoga Springs, NY - Junior Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY) continued his season-long dominance in game one and classmates TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY) and Gerald Stothers (Malta, NY) came through with three-hit games in the nightcap as the Clarkson University Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Liberty League foe Skidmore College 1-0 and 10-9 Wednesday afternoon.
With the pair of victories, the Golden Knights improved to 16-14 overall and 9-6 in the Liberty League while the Thoroughbreds dropped to 14-15 and 5-9.
In game one, Carey came back on three days rest after beating Skidmore on Saturday to pitch another masterful game. The junior righthander earned his eighth victory of the season without a loss, striking out seven and allowing only two hits over seven innings. It was his fifth complete game of the season and his second 1-0 shutout in less than two weeks. Carey became only the second pitcher in Clarkson history to reach the 8-0 mark, matching Matt Nolan in the 2000 season.
Clarkson would get all of the scoring it would need in the fourth inning when freshman Mike Bresett (Norwood, NY) singled home Stefan Casey (Waterbury, VT) who had doubled with two outs. Carey saw runners reach second and third with only one out in the sixth, but a strikeout and a pop up ended the threat.
In game two, Clarkson needed to count more on its offense and fortunately for the Knights the offense came through. Trailing 9-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Clarkson rallied for four runs to take a 10-9 lead. Two runs came in on an errant throw while Stothers delivered a single up the middle past the drawn in infield to tie the game. A fielder's choice followed by an error on the same play plated Sal DiSanza (Elbridge, NY) with the winning run.
Brinkman was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Stothers went 3-for-4 in game two, which saw freshman Greg Chojecki (West Seneca, NY) earn his third victory of the season against no losses. For the doubleheader, Mike Bresett went 5-for-7 for the Golden Knights.
