A dominating start led to a 14-5 victory for the Clarkson University Lacrosse team over Potsdam State Wednesday afternoon on the Bears’ artificial turf field. The Golden Knights, who scored three times in the opening four minutes, jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and held a commanding 10-1 advantage at the half.
The Bears (3-3) outscored the Green and Gold 3-1 in the third quarter, but Clarkson turned the tables in the fourth frame by out scoring Potsdam by the same margin over the final 15 minutes to record its sixth straight win over its cross-town rivals.
Freshman Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) scored four goals, while senior Brian Hanlon (Marcellus, NY) tallied three goals and three assists to power the Knights’ offense in Clarkson’s second victory of the year. Freshman Corey Reinhart (Albany, NY) chipped in with two goals.
Junior Nick Lavdas (Lafayette, NY) anchored Clarkson’s stingy defense and recorded a game-high six groundballs along with scoring one goal. Senior captain Bryan Johnson (Newark, NY) and freshmen Cory Schneider (Yorktown, NY), Erik Hilfinger (Ann Arbor, NY) and Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY) also scored goals in Clarkson’s most productive offensive outing of the season.
The Knights out shot Potsdam 41-19 and held a 22-16 advantage in groundballs.
Freshman Eric Wolery (Cincinnati, OH) made nine saves through 56:41 of play. Sophomore Bryan McClure (Painted Post, NY), who closed out the game in the Clarkson goal, did not face any shots through the final 3:19 of action.
