HOLIDAY DELIVERS GAME-WINNING HIT AS KNIGHTS SPLIT AGAINST RPI

March 25, 2006

Troy, NY - Freshman Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY) came through in the bottom of the seventh with the game-winning RBI on a single to lift the Clarkson University Baseball team to a come-from-behind victory over Rensselaer, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Robison Field. The Golden Knights fell in the nightcap, 13-7, for the split.

The Golden Knights moved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League while Rensselaer improved to 6-6 and 2-2 in the conference. Clarkson continues its eight-game road trip next weekend when it visits Union.

Senior Kevin Hickey (Clifton Park, NY) pitched six and a third innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out three for the Golden Knights in the opener. Jaime Tunison (Ithaca, NY) came on in relief of Hickey and got the final two outs of the seventh inning, earning the win as the pitcher of record. The Golden Knights trailed 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the team cut the RPI advantage in half, before scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh.

In the second game, RPI discovered its offense and scored 13 runs through the first six innings while Red Hawks senior Charles Yarnold pitched a one-hitter through the first 21 outs. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Clarkson rallied to score seven runs, but came up short in the comeback attempt. Freshman Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY) led the Knights with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double, a run scored and an RBI.
