FRITJOFSON REACHES ANOTHER CAREER-HIGH AS KNIGHTS FALL TO HERONS

February 17, 2006

Potsdam, NY – Senior Erika Fritjofson (East Barre, VT) scored a career-high 22 points for her fourth 20-point game of the season, but William Smith’s steady play and 53 percent shooting from the floor game the Herons a 83-48 victory over the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 5-19 overall and 1-12 in the Liberty League while William Smith solidified its hopes for the number-one seed in the post-season tournament, moving to 19-4 and 12-1.

The game started sloppy as the two teams combined for 10 turnovers in the first 4:15 of play with William Smith up 6-3. The Herons went on a 19-5 run over a five-minute span midway through the half to take a significant double-digit advantage, a lead which would be gradually extended through the half until Clarkson’s Erika Fritjofson made a pair of free throws with no time remaining to cut the lead to 24 points, 43-19, at the half.

Stephanie Czajkowski scored 15 points and added six rebounds in the first half to lead the Herons while Tanya Richvalsky contributed seven points on 3-for-4 shooting for William Smith. Fritjofson scored 10 points to lead the Knights. Clarkson’s second chance opportunities were limited to just two offensive rebounds as William Smith controlled the glass 25-12 overall.

In the second half, the game was much the same with William Smith extending its lead over 30 on a handful of occasions, but Clarkson was able to stop the Herons push with some outside makes and free throws. Late in the half, William Smith continued to make shots and ended with a 35-point advantage.

Czajkowski finished with 19 points in 19 minutes to lead the Herons, shooting 7-for-12 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the line. Pria Young and Kristen Suatoni each added 10 points for William Smith.

Sarah Wesner (Sidney, NY) added 10 points for Clarkson, making 6-of-8 from the free throw line. The Golden Knights finished the game with a 46-24 deficit on the boards.
