Plattsburgh, NY - Senior forward Erick Vigansky (Kenosha, WI) shot 7-for-9 from the field for a game-high 17 points, but it wasn't enough as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team suffered its first setback of the season in a 73-63 loss to Plattsburgh State on Tuesday night at Memorial Hall.
The Golden Knights saw their season-opening 5-0 record, the best start for the team since the 1947-48 season, blemished with the loss while Plattsburgh improved to 4-3 on the year. Clarkson returns to action on Thursday and Friday when the team finishes out the 2006 portion of the schedule at the University of Scranton and Wilkes University.
Solid shooting from beyond the 3-point arc and a hefty advantage from the free throw line led to Plattsburgh gaining a 10-point advantage at the break, but the two teams played even in the second half and Clarkson was unable to make any headway to get back into the game.
Vigansky tied his season-high with 17 points in the game and added seven rebounds, also a team-high. Senior guard EJ Harrison (Troy, NY) shot 7-for-14 from the field and recorded 14 points to go along with his team-highs of 5 assists and 3 steals. Ryan Smith (Wilson, NY) and Brandon Linton (Queens, NY) added eight and seven points, respectively, for Clarkson.
Four players finished in double figures for the Cardinals with Anthony Williams and Khylan Hunt each scoring 17 points. Hunt was 8-for-10 from the floor in just 26 minutes. Jerrad Dumont added 12 points and Mike Dietz scored 11 points for Plattsburgh. Travis Gorham, the Cardinals' fifth starter, scored just seven points but dominated on the boards with 14 rebounds. The 73 points allowed by Clarkson was 10 more points than any other opponent had scored all season.
