Potsdam, NY - Freshman Genevieve Lavoie (St. Laurent, QUE) scored her second and third career goals as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team came back from a one-goal deficit to record a 3-1 non-league victory over Robert Morris University in front of 162 fans Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights evened their season record at 5-5-2 overall with their second straight win. The Colonials dropped to 4-7-1. Clarkson returns to action next weekend when it visits Wayne State in Michigan.
It took seven minutes and thirty seconds before the Colonials could get a shot on goal, but that lone attempt put Robert Morris up 1-0. A hooking penalty by Clarkson was quickly followed by a body-checking penalty, allowing the Colonials a 5-on-3 chance. The Golden Knights killed off all of the 5-on-3 time, but couldn't continue to hold off the Colonials as Mallory Giambra blasted a slap shot from the blue line. Samantha Ullrich and Kristen Miles earned assists on the goal, with Ullrich setting up the goal with a quick pass from about 15 feet away. The Colonials goal marked the first time that the team had scored a goal in three games against Clarkson, a period of 127:30.
The second period was dominated by the Golden Knights as it took over 17 minutes for the Colonials to get a shot on goal. Clarkson continually placed pressure on the Robert Morris net with numerous rushes, finally coming up with a goal at 8:54 in the period when Genevieve Lavoie scored on a quick shot in the slot. Freshman linemate Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) earned the assist with a quick pass from the left circle.
In the opening minutes of the third period, Lavoie picked up an unassisted goal when her shot deflected off the stick of a Robert Morris defender and the puck trickled over the goalline at 2:51. Clarkson extended its lead at 11:07 when freshman defenseman Carlee Eusepi (Oakville, ONT) scored her second career goal when she blasted a slapshot from the blueline that skidded along the ice and jarred the back of the goal underneath the gloveside of Robert Morris goaltender Heather Rossi. Melissa Marshall (Oak Lawn, IL) and Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) each were awarded assists on the Knights' third goal.
The Knights swarmed the Robert Morris goal throughout the game and held a significant shot advantage throughout, leading 10-4 in the opening frame, 15-3 in the second stanza and 8-1 in the third period, closing with a 33-8 lead in shots.
Senior goaltender Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB) finished with seven saves for the Knights. Heather Rossi recorded 30 saves for the Colonials.
