Potsdam, NY - Freshman Scott Marcinkowski's (Wappinger Falls, NY) first career goal could not have come at a better time for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team as the Golden Knights shut out Hobart 1-0 on the first-year player's score in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights ended a seven-game winless streak and improved to 1-6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Hobart fell to 3-4-1 and 0-2 after being shut out 1-0 for the second straight day.

The opening 45 minutes were played very evenly with both teams having decent scoring opportunities. Both Micke Subotowicz and Chris Rogers skimmed the post on shots but the Statesmen couldn't gain a goal in the first half.

Marcinkowski's goal came at the 35:42 mark of the first half as junior Justin Crowley's (Central Square, NY) initial attempt deflected off the post. With the goalkeeper suddenly out of position, Marcinkowski was able to chip a shot in from close just out of his reach to give the Knights the lead.

In the second half, most of the play was in the Clarkson end as the Knights had to try to shut down a powerful Hobart attack. The Statesmen peppered the goal with crosses and close shots, but junior David Hennessey (Wading River, NY) was up to task and made six saves.

Hennessey finished with six saves in the game while Phil DaCosta made one stop in net for Hobart.

The Golden Knights were out shot 13-6, including a 7-1 margin in the second 45 minutes, and trailed 9-1 in corner kicks.
