CLARKSON'S COSTLY MISCUES LEAD TO SWEEP AT RPI

May 1, 2005

Troy, NY – Errors abounded for the Clarkson University Baseball team against Rensselaer as the Golden Knights allowed 14 unearned runs on Sunday when the Golden Knights dropped a doubleheader to the Red Hawks 15-5 and 9-5.

The Golden Knights lost control of first place in the Liberty League with the pair of losses, falling to 16-11 overall and 7-3 in the conference. Rensselaer improved its standing to 21-12 and 8-2.

In the opening game, the Golden Knights picked up an unearned run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead but it would be the last time they owned the lead. Rensselaer scored two in the first, two in the second and eight more in the bottom of the third inning to take a 12-1 lead. Clarkson made six errors in the opening three innings, leading to 10 unearned runs allowed by starter Dan Hojnacki (Attica, NY). Adam Anderson (Rensselaer, NY) came on in relief for the final three innings and held the Red Hawks to just three more runs. Stefan Casey (Waterbury, VT) hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to make the score 15-5, but Clarkson ended the game in the seventh inning when Brandon Barcomb (Cadyville, NY) lined into a triple play with men on first and second base.

Clarkson fell behind 2-0 in the second game after the opening inning saw the Knights make three more errors. This time, however, Clarkson was able to compose itself in the coming innings and took a 3-2 lead with a two-run single by Rob Cowin (Albany, NY) in the third inning and an RBI-single by Giovan Scialdone (Colonie, NY) in the fourth inning. Rensselaer came back to tie the game with a solo home run by Dan Quinn in the sixth inning, but Barcomb hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give the Knights a 5-3 lead. Unfortunately, a six-run rally, which included a grand slam by freshman catcher Stevan Slusher, gave the Red Hawks a sweep.

Sophomore second baseman TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY) went 3-for-3 in the first game for Clarkson while Casey was 2-for-3 with his 3-run homer. Cowin and Scialdone each delivered two hits for the Knights in the nightcap.
