Six different Golden Knights scored goals and sophomore David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) made 37 saves as Clarkson University rallied for a 6-4 non-conference win on the road over Bowling Green on Friday night.
Clarkson, which improved its record to 10-4-1, will close out its road trip to Ohio tomorrow night with a 7:35 pm game at number-two ranked Miami University.
The Knights started out a lengthy stretch of road games, which will see the Green and Gold play 10 of their next 11 games away from Cheel Arena, with a stunning comeback against the Falcons. The Knights trailed 1-0 after the first and found themselves down 3-0 early in the second as Bowling Green (4-11-1) capitalized on power-play opportunities to grab a seemingly comfortable lead just 4:04 into the middle stanza.
Junior Michael Grenzy (Lockport, NY) started a five-goal outburst for the Green and Gold with his second goal of the season, a blast from the point for a power-play marker at 11:46. Freshman Chris D'Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) stuffed in a wrap-around shot at 14:19 to make it 3-2. With 12 seconds remaining in the second, sophomore Steve Zalewski (New Hartford, NY), all alone at the doorstep, took a pass from classmate Shawn Weller (South Glens Falls, NY) in the corner and knocked in a power-play goal for his fourth score of the year to tie the game 3-3.
The Knights continue to roll in the third to take the lead. Junior Mike Sullivan (Stuffily, ONT) connected off a pass from sophomore Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT), who picked up his second assist of the game, at 1:45 to give Clarkson a 4-3 advantage. At 9:38, Zalewski returned the favor to Weller when he won a faceoff to the South Glens Falls, NY native who one-timed in his team-high 10-goal of the year to give the Knights a two-goal lead.
Bowling Green mounted a comeback effort of its own in the later stages of the final stanza and pulled to within one, scoring on a four-on-four situation at 16:42. The Knights, however, held off the Falcons’ rally and iced the victory with senior assistant captain Jeff Genovy’s (Kalamazoo, MI) empty-net, power-play tally with one second left. Genovy also collected two assists in the victory.
The Falcons out shot Clarkson 41-29, but Leggio came up with his best effort of the season, including stops on several BGSU breakaways, to gain his fourth win of the year.
The Knights were 3-of-8 on the power play, while Bowling Green was 2-of-9 with the man-advantage.
