Junior Kyle McNulty (Wakefield, RI) posted 23 saves and four different players scored for Clarkson University as the Golden Knights defeated Union College 4-1 before 2,298 in ECAC Hockey League action at Cheel Arena Saturday night. Clarkson, which extended its unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1), improves to 5-2-1 overall and to 1-0-1 in the ECACHL. The Dutchmen, who dropped their second game over the weekend, fall to 3-4-1 overall and to 0-2 in the league.
Strong specialty teams play to start the game help put Clarkson up 1-0 early in the first. After killing off a penalty just 18 seconds after the opening faceoff, the Golden Knights made quick work on their first man-advantage opportunity, scoring 70 seconds into the power play. Sophomore Shawn Weller (South Glens Falls, NY) tipped in a shot from the point by classmate, defenseman Grant Clitsome (Gloucester, ONT) at 4:25 for his team-high sixth goal of the season. Freshman Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) also set up the goal for his team-high eighth assist.
Clarkson made it 2-0 at 1:12 of the second period as senior Jeff Genovy (Kalamazoo, MI) scored his fourth of the year, a 5-on-3 power-play goal off assists from juniors Mike Sullivan (Stouffville, ONT) and Michael Grenzy (Lockport, NY). With just two seconds left in the middle stanza, Josh Coyle put Union on the scoreboard, scoring on a warp-around shot for his fifth goal of the year with freshman Lane Caffaro assisting.
The Knights’ sealed the win with two third-period tallies. Freshman Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) made it 3-1 with a highlight-reel score when he deked a Union defenseman in the slot and lifted a backhand shot up top for his second goal of the season at 8:49. Senior captain Chris Brekelmans (London, ONT) and junior Brodie Rutherglen (Trail, BC) assisted. Guthrie iced the victory with an empty-net tally off an assist from classmate Philippe Paquet (Quebec City, QUE) with 1:56 remaining.
Clarkson out shot the Dutchmen 26-24. Kris Mayotte posted 22 stops for Union. The Knights were 2-of-7 on the power play and killed off all nine Union man-advantage chances.
Clarkson takes to the road for the first time in over a month next weekend when it plays at Brown and Yale
