THOROUGHBREDS OUTRUN KNIGHTS TO LAST LIBERTY LEAGUE SPOT

October 22, 2005

Saratoga Springs, NY - A winner-takes-all scenario was sprung on Saturday afternoon and unfortunately for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team, they finished the Liberty League conference schedule on the outside and looking in as Skidmore clinched the final conference playoff spot with a 5-1 win over the Golden Knights.

The Knights fell to 3-10-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the Liberty League while the Thoroughbreds moved to 9-4-2 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play.

Whomever won Saturday's contest was assured a spot in the Liberty League tournament and both teams were aware of the situation before the weekend even began. The first half was played fairly even as the Thoroughbreds owned a 6-4 advantage in shots and a one-goal lead when Pete Brownell scored at 39:09 in the opening half on a pass from Ty Thiele.

Skidmore picked up a second goal at 61:45 in the second stanza when Frank Longo connected from Mark Roseboom. Clarkson responded when freshman Kevin Martens (Salt Point, NY) scored his fourth goal of the season to cut the advantage to 2-1 at 70:02, but Skidmore scored just 1:42 later and added two more insurance goals in the final 6:06.

Junior goalkeeper David Hennessey (Wading River, NY) stopped nine shots for the Golden Knights and Jake Densen made two saves for Skidmore.
